Award winning Dundee-based jeweller Jane Gowans built a reputation for producing outstanding contemporary work that is derived from her passion for experimentation and traditional craft practice. Her simple, stylish, striking pieces are made to be engaging and accessible and have won many a celebrity admirer, including singer Emeli Sandé, actress Emma Thompson and TV presenter Laura Whitmore.
Gowans approached Rydo to produce her identity design while she was in the early stages of building her business and this carried through into promotional material across her Geology Rocks and Captain collections. A distinctive ‘maker’s mark’ symbol was created which encapsulates the Jane Gowans philosophy and which looks resplendent in silver or gold when stamped onto packaging and print. As with the work itself, the broader visual identity employs a geometry-focused and playful approach to colour, pattern, sequences, repetition and mark making.
For the promotion of the Captain range, a commemorative mini newspaper was printed to distribute at London Fashion Week, prior to the collection’s official launch. This presented an opportunity to make use of graphic identity elements, which were normally limited to appearing in look books, to be explored in a larger, more expansive printed format.
